What goes into a regular maintenance program for your espresso machine?
Every three months, you will need to do minor services that will not take that long but can benefit your machine and its performance.
Here is what is involved in that three-month maintenance; replacement of the group gaskets; replace the shower screens (this is also a good opportunity to upgrade to VST or IMS screens, if you do not already have them). Test the group flow rates and temperature to make sure they are all working correctly and all your switches. If they are not working properly, now is the time to get them replaced.
Keep in mind that if you find anything not working properly or you see any signs of damage, it is important to make sure that you have it checked out by an experienced service tech and any replacements made promptly.
Every six months, you need to have a major service completed. This process involves doing everything that you did for a minor service, but also includes; rebuilding the steam assembly, replacing your port filter baskets (this is also a good opportunity to upgrade into IMS baskets, if you have not already done so). Replace your waste pipe (if it is necessary) as well as the capacitor on pump motor and before solenoids. Replace the sight glass and servicing your non-return valve. Checking for steam or water leaks with a dentist’s mirror.
Remember that the point of this service is similar to a routine oil change and checkup. You are keeping your machine running at its best because you are taking the time to address any potential issues before they become problems.
There are also going to be items that will need to be addressed from time to time outside of your routine maintenance schedule. The reality is that some items have a specific lifetime that is unrelated to how often you service the machine. There are items that might last forever, or they might need regular replacement, depending on the conditions of use. A café with poor quality water, for example, might have to change their filters and descale their machine twice a year. A café with great water, on the other hand, might only need to do this every two years.
These are the things that you need to be careful with, to avoid potential issues; changing the water filters, replacement of your pump, Replacement of switches and solenoids (electro-valves), descaling of the machine, replacement of pressure regulating valve, check elements, replacement of worn-down bells on group heads and changing or resetting pressure gauges.
